Historic Halifax Walking Tour (2- 2.5 Hours) Discover the old core of downtown Halifax the way it’s seen best: by foot. Visit the lovely Grand Parade Square, site of military drills in days gone by, and see the oldest Anglican Church in Canada. Burial site of 150 victims of this ill-fated ocean liner, Halifax was dubbed for a time as the “Funeral City”, and its inhabitants were greatly commended on their response and compassion during the relief effort. Serving as a base for the recovery operation, Halifax received the bodies of over 200 victims, and implemented the numbered marking system used to help identify the unknown by their belongings. This tour will encompass all aspects of Halifax’ connection to this devastating event, including the historic pier from where the cable ships were dispatched to pick up victims; the church where memorial services were held; the temporary morgue sites which housed the bodies of such wealthy victims as John Jacob Astor; and Fairview Cemetery, where row upon row of identical gravestones, laid out in the shape of a ship’s hull, mark the final resting place of 120 victims. Settled in the mid 1750’s by Germans and Swiss, its citizens still retain one of the most interesting accents in North America. Now a bustling fishing port, Lunenburg was once considered to be the busiest shipbuilding town in the world, and was the birthplace of the world-famous racing schooner Bluenose. The town’s distinctive architecture and extraordinary scenic beauty is a colourful reminder of our maritime heritage. While in Lunenburg the group will enjoy a delicious lunch at the Old Fish Factory Restaurant. Afterwards, join us on a walking tour conducted by local historian, to learn the fascinating folklore of Lunenburg’s past and present.
